T3i Winner, New T3i Contest, Slider Discount, etc

IN THIS ISSUE: 1) T3i winner, 2) new T3i contest, 3) DIY114B Slider Coupon Code for discount, 4) more slider info …

DIY114B SLIDER KIT USE WITH CHEAP TRIPODS

It is not necessary to use a pair of very expensive tripods.  We have tested some cheap tripods.  The Targus TGT-BK58T is about $20 online, and works reasonably well for holding up an end of the slider, especially when you keep the tripod head close to the sticks (don't crank up the neck far).

CARBON FIBER RODS

We tested out some 8ft 5/8" dia carbon fiber rods.  They are really light, and really expensive.  However, they just are not as rigid under load as the steel at this length with the type of construction used.  Short lengths (like 3ft) would probably be fine, but at short lenghts like that, aluminum would work as well, which is lighter and almost 1/2 the price of the steel (as opposed to almost 10x the price of the steel for the CF).  So, it's not a path I recommend at this time.

SLIDER WEIGHT CAPACITY – I've gotten some questions about the slider weight capacity.  It is capable of handling plenty of weight. Watch this video to learn more:

INTERNATIONAL USERS – USE WITH 15mm RODS - The I'm keeping a log of international sources for 5/8" diameter rods.  For example, the 5/8" diameter rods are available in the UK from www.metals4u.co.uk .  Please send me your source for 5/8" diameter rods for your country.  However, the DIY114B can also be used with 15mm rods, which are more widely available over seas.  Watch this video to see how to use 15mm rods with the DIY114B:

CARBON FIBER RODS - One of my blog subscribers turned me on to a source for 5/8" diameter carbon fiber rods.  I've ordered some, and I'll be posting a review on the blog.

MOTORIZED SLIDER - Emm from Cheesycam has come up with a way of motorizing the slider.  I'm giong to look into designing a little bracket, to make a more robust mount for the motor.  Watch the Cheesycam video to see this approach for motorizing the DIY114B:

Slider Released

juicedLink DIY SLIDER – RELEASED !!!

Here is what is new.  The DIY116B is no longer offered as a stand alone SKU.  It is bundled with the DIY114B Slider Kit.  We added a wheel-arm to the platform (which was known as the DIY116B), so the side bearing wheel can be adjusted to meet up with the side of the rods.  Watch this video to see more details:

We've added some tips to the DIY114B User Manual.  This is my favorite.  Watch this video to see how a single person can set up an 8 foot slider on 2 tripods:

DIY Slider Update – Fix looks good !!!

The prototype of the wheel-arm for the DIY116B is back.  It works really well … keeps the rails nice and snug …

So, we are going into production with the fix.  Assuming our machine shop can turn them quickly as they did with the prototype, then we’ll be open for orders again in about 1-2 weeks or so.  We will notify you on the blog when we’re shipping again.

Thank you for your patience.

In the mean time, we will be working on more sample footage and stuff.  By the way, we had trouble with our Vimeo account (account got closed because we mistakenly upgraded to Vimeo Plus instead of Vimeo Pro for a commercial account – and they closed the account on us before we could fix it), so links to some of the old videos don’t embed anymore.  We’ll create a new account and post/link the new footage there.

SLIDER: 8FT FOOTAGE / PROGRAM UPDATE

SLIDER: 8FT FOOTAGE / PROGRAM UPDATE

There are some things you need to know about the DIY Slider project.  We’ve put sales on hold rignt now.  Watch this video to learn why, and also see some unique ways of using 8ft sliders and associated footage:

The 8ft slider applications look really promising.  But, I’m not 100% satisfied with the results.  The workaround described is fairly straightforward to implement.  We will check with our machine shop to see how quickly we can turn the rotating plate/arm for the DIY106B.

Here are more details on the program status:

  • Slider sales have been put on hold, while the workaround is in progress
  • We will send emails to current customers who purchased the slider systems last week, and get them taken care of with refunds as necessary (from juicedLink as well as OnlineMetals.  We hope to have you return as customers as quickly as possible.
  • I’ve decided on a couple of other smaller changes.  We’re going to bundle the DIY114B and DIY116B.  I want the rod constraning feature on the small rod systems as well.  Also, I went back and fourth on the spec for the short rods less than 4 ft.  I thought people would prefer the lighter aluminum.  But, I’m going to change the spec so all rods are steel.

I apologize for the confusion.  But, I’m confident that this change will provide a better user experience for everybody.  As you can see from the footage, the 8ft slider applications are very exciting.  The response we’ve received this last week was very encouraging.  So, it’s time for us to make it right now …
